With frontispiece and title page, 158 (including 2 double-sheet-sized) partially coloured maps, 1 page of legends and 15 pages of text, all engraved. Paris, Desnos, 1777. 16° (11.2 x 6.5 cm). A charming French Rococo street atlas designed to fit in a pocket, throughout in a pastel-coloured antique palette. – Cf. Phillips 7704. – This fully engraved itinerary by Charles-Louis Desnos (1725–1805), a geographer, copperplate engraver, globemaker and maker of surveying instruments, map dealer and purveyor to the Danish court, contains consistently precisely drawn and vigorously engraved maps depicting travel routes radiating out from Paris in all directions across France, as well as to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Great Britain. - The double-sheet engravings include a general map of France and a plan of Paris, whilst 16 of the text pages contain route descriptions. Bound in are 12 blank sheets for notes, one of which bears contemporary notes in pencil. - Front endpapers and frontispiece (recto) bearing several 19th-century owner’s inscriptions. The first and last leaves are slightly soiled and show finger marks in places; otherwise, the volume is clean overall.
