First American edition. – The book documents the Kingdom of Great Britain’s first formal attempt to establish direct diplomatic relations with the Chinese Empire under the Qing Dynasty and to open up trade beyond the port of Canton. At a time when Westerners had virtually no access to the Chinese hinterland or to the imperial court in Beijing, Staunton (who served as secretary to the mission) provided precise ethnographic, geographical and political observations. The report describes customs (such as foot-binding), administration, technology, and flora and fauna. – Sun-faded, some foxing, name on endpaper and title page, frontispiece with minor marginal discolouration.
