China, Korea MacLeod, John Voyage of His Majesty’s Ship Alceste to China, Korea and the Island of Lewchew, with an account of her shipwreck. With 1 engraved frontispiece, 5 aquatint plates, 4 folded coloured lithographic plates and 3 folded maps. London, John Murray, 1820. 2 leaves, 339 pp. Large 8°, (modern) half leather with gilt title. Third edition. – Abbey, Travel 559 – An additional illustrated edition featuring two further folded maps of the island of Lew-Chew, the second showing the surrounding area, both signed ‘Ackerman Lith.’, as well as four further folded colour lithographs. - Historical expedition to China, Korea and the island of Lewchew (Okinawa) aboard the ‘Alceste’ under the command of Captain Murray Maxwell, with John MLeod appointed as ship’s surgeon. The HMS “Alceste” was shipwrecked in the Strait of Gaspar, after which the crew were stranded on a nearby island. Despite several attacks by Malay pirates, there were no fatalities, and the crew were rescued by a ship of the British East India Company. - Slight smudge from the frontispiece on the title page; brown frame on the reverse of the copperplate title page from a former insert sheet; overall a good, clean copy. Third Edition. – Extra illustrated edition containing two additional folding maps of the Island of Lew-Chew, the second showing the surrounding area, both signed ‘Ackerman Lith.’, and four additional folding colour lithographs. – Light offsetting of the frontispiece etching onto the title page. A thin brown frame on the recto and verso of the page containing directions for the plates, from an unknown removed insert.
