Zuccagni-Orlandini, Attilio
Map of Italy in fifteen sheets. 15 copperplate maps, hand-coloured in yellow, green, pink and light blue, from the ‘Atlante geografico degli stati italiani’, featuring place names and locations, mountain and water features, and a graphic scale of 1:600,000. Florence, or Dr. (Società Editrice), 1842. Approx. 60 x 47 cm (plate size) and approx. 87.5 x 61 cm (sheet size). Loose sheets of thick handmade paper, folded once and printed on one side (recto embossed with a monogram), with a reinforced centre fold (which shows tears and traces of adhesive from a former binding).
A monumental map of Italy measuring 2.35 x 1.80 m in total. – The outer margins of the finely drawn and boldly engraved map sheets are framed by an attractive interlaced border enclosed by a double line. Sheet 3 features a large typographic title cartouche; sheet 13 includes a general overview map and detailed legends, as well as scale indications (8 different Italian miles, plus Austrian and English miles, French leagues and kilometres). - Zuccagni-Orlandini’s *Atlante geografico degli stati italiani* (1842–44) was published in three parts, distributed across two volumes: Vol. 1 contained this map as well as 52 maps of Northern Italy; Vol. 2 comprised 77 maps of Southern Italy. - Throughout, however, there are water stains, most of which are only faintly visible; otherwise, the sheets are well preserved with full, uncut margins.
