Japan Eisen, Keisai Sunset in Naka-no-cho: The courtesan Yokoyama of the Matsubaya house (Naka-no-cho sekisho, Matsubaya uchi Yoyoyama). From: Eight Views of New Yoshiwara (Shin Yoshiwara hakkei). Circa 1830. Colour woodblock print on Japanese paper. 38.5 x 26 cm. Signed on the block ‘Keisai Eisen ga’, with a censorship seal (kiwame) and publisher’s mark (Tsutaya Kichizo). Mounted on backing in places. The illustration depicts the high-ranking courtesan in full figure, her head turned back, wearing a magnificent multi-layered robe; in the top right-hand corner, an inset view looking down the main street of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter, lined with cherry blossoms. - Paper browned with age; partially soiled and stained, particularly at the edges; colours somewhat faded; slight ink bleed-through on the reverse. Overall in good condition with an excellent print of the composition without margins. From: Eight Views of the New Yoshiwara (Shin Yoshiwara hakkei). c. 1830. Colour woodblock print on Japanese paper. Signed in the block ‘Keisai Eisen ga’, with kiwame censor’s seal and publisher’s mark (Tsutaya Kichizo). Hinged at points to a backing sheet. – The print depicts the high-ranking courtesan in full figure, her head turned back, wearing a magnificent multi-layered garment; in the top right-hand corner is an inset image showing a view of the cherry-blossom-lined main street of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter. - Paper browned with age, partially soiled and stained, particularly at the margins; colours faded; slight show-through of colour on the reverse. Overall in good condition, with an excellent impression, without margins.
