Japan Hiroshige I, Utagawa Fujikawa: The Village of Yamanaka, formerly known as Miyajiyama (Fujikawa, Yamanaka no sato, kyumei Miyajiyama). 1855. Colour woodblock print on Japanese paper. 34 x 22.5 cm (35.5 x 24 cm). Signed in the block ‘Hiroshige ga’, with the censorship seal (aratame), the date seal (Hase 7, 1855) and the publisher’s mark (Tsutaya Kichizo). Mounted in places onto a backing board. Sheet 38 from the series ‘Famous Views of the 53 Stations (Gojusan tsugi meisho zue)’, also known as the ‘Vertical Tōkaidō’. - Atmospheric snowy landscape viewed from a bird’s-eye perspective: travellers wearing straw hats and straw cloaks make their way through the village on the Tokaido Road, which is deeply covered in snow, framed by a snow-laden pine tree amidst heavy snowfall. - Paper browned with age, more so at the edges; partially slightly soiled and stained; edges partly slightly irregular; slight crease marks; colours slightly faded. Overall in good condition with an excellent, richly detailed print of the atmospheric composition with a narrow margin. Colour woodblock print on Japanese paper. Signed in the block “Hiroshige ga”, with the aratame censor’s seal, the date seal Hare 7 (1855) and the publisher’s mark of Tsutaya Kichizo. Hinged at points to a backing sheet. - Sheet 38 from the series ‘Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations (Gojusan tsugi meisho zue)’, also known as the ‘Vertical Tokaido’. - An atmospheric snow landscape viewed from a bird’s-eye perspective: travellers in straw hats and straw raincoats pass through the village on the Tokaido road, which is deeply covered in snow, framed by a snow-laden pine tree beneath heavy snowfall. - The paper is browned, particularly at the margins; it is soiled and stained; the left margin has minor defects and losses; and there are light creases. Overall in good condition, with an excellent, high-contrast impression of the atmospheric composition, featuring narrow margins.
