Japan Utagawa, Kuniyoshi Kocho: Abe no Yasuna from the series Genji kumo ukiyo-e awase (‘Ukiyo-e comparisons with the cloud-filled chapters of the Genji’), sheet 24. Japan, Edo (1603–1868). Probably c. 1845–46. Coloured woodblock print (nishiki-e) on paper, vertical Oban format. Signed lower left ‘Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga’, with a red ‘Kiri’ seal, the publisher’s seal ‘Iseya Ichibei’ (Iseichi) and the censor’s seal ‘Watari’. Cf. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Inv. No. 11.36527. - The print combines an allusion to the ‘Kocho’ (‘Butterflies’) chapter from the *Genji monogatari* with a dramatic, contemporary interpretation of a theatrical scene centred on Abe no Yasuna. The composition depicts Yasuna, dressed in a magnificently patterned robe and holding a fan, whilst two butterflies flutter above him; on the right, a second figure, depicted as a warrior, intervenes in the scene. - With a horizontal crease in the centre of the image; age-related discolouration, minimal browning, and occasional colour fading. - Overall in good condition.
