Cartography Robert de Vaugondy et al., Gilles A collection of 4 maps, including 2 two-part maps of the ancient world. Each is a multicoloured, border-coloured copperplate map with detailed legends and geographical labels, (partly illustrated) title cartouches, mountain and waterlines, and various graphic scales. Paris, 1737, 1743, 1750 and c. 1780. Each approx. 81 x 54 cm (sheet size). Six sheets of thick handmade paper, each folded once and printed on one side, thread-sewn along a wide central fold and reinforced with a paper strip (which has small tears and traces of glue from a former binding). Contains: 1. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy et al., *Carte pour servir à la lecture de l’histoire ancienne des Egyptiens, des Carthaginois, des Assyriens, des Babyloniens, des Mèdes, des Perses, des Macédoniens, des Grecs*. Engraved by Le Tellier. Paris, 1737. 2 double leaves, totalling approx. 133 x 104 cm (plates) and approx. 162 x 108 cm (leaves). - 2. Paris, c. 1780. 2 double sheets, totalling approx. 119 x 100 cm (plates) and approx. 162 x 108 cm (sheets). - Some slight finger and dirt stains in the margins, as well as occasional minor creases and handling marks; overall, well-preserved, wide-margined maps with high-contrast printing and bold border colouring. Set of 4 beautifully drawn and skilfully printed French maps of the ancient world, 2 of which are in two parts. Each features coloured borders, detailed legends and geographical labels, (partly illustrated) title cartouches, mountain and river lines, as well as various graphic scales. Paris, 1737, 1743, 1750 and c. 1780. Each approx. 81 x 54 cm (sheet size). Six sheets of heavy handmade paper, folded once and printed on one side, thread-sewn along a broad central fold which is reinforced with a paper strip (the latter showing small tears and adhesive residue from a previous binding). - For details on each map, see the German description above. - Margins are occasionally slightly finger-stained and soiled, and show minor creases; overall, these are well-preserved, wide-margined maps with high-contrast printing and bold border colouring.
