First edition. - Blackmer 1193 - Gernsheim, Incunaula of British Photogr. Lit., 284 - This work documents Newton’s travels, excavations and discoveries in the Aegean region and along the coast of present-day Turkey between 1852 and 1859. The most historically significant part of the work is the detailed account of the localisation and excavation of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. The tomb of King Mausolus II was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Newton succeeded in uncovering the foundations and recovering spectacular sculptural fragments (including the famous colossal statues and parts of the Amazon frieze). - Endpapers slightly stained; frontispiece with a tear in the fold, occasionally slightly stained.
