It was on these discoveries by Meares that Great Britain’s claims to Oregon mainly depended.” – John Meares was a British captain and navigator. He began his career in the Royal Navy at the age of 15 as a captain’s cabin boy. He rose slowly through the ranks and organised his first fur-trading expedition in 1786. He was subsequently involved in the fur trade between British Columbia and China. The accounts of his expeditions provided valuable information about the indigenous peoples of the north-western coast of North America. - In places, heavily foxed and with smudges from plates.
