Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt edges and gilt title, leather corners with gilt decoration and three-sided edges (slightly stained and rubbed, scuff marks on the leather blackened).
First edition of the ‘Second Series’, the rare deluxe edition featuring hand-coloured, magnificent lithographic plates throughout. - Colnaghi, 1855–1856. - Abbey 237. - Lipperheide Qc 27. - The ‘Second Series’ documents the dramatic finale of the war. It contains gripping depictions such as the devastating assault on the Malakoff Tower (‘Attack on the Malakoff’), the fall of Sevastopol, the lives of the soldiers during the harsh winter, as well as landscapes and fortifications of the peninsula. This deluxe edition was painstakingly and faithfully hand-coloured with watercolours by the publisher.
