Description
South America Martius, Carl Fr. Ph. von A collection of 19 ink drawings (washed and in sepia) and watercolours, as well as 32 lithographed plates by E. Bollmann, F. Hohe, C. A. Lebschée and others, from the Martius estate. c. 1810–1855. Various formats, mostly mounted on backing board (approx. 35.5 x 27 cm). Loose in a paper box with a handwritten label reading ‘Martius Nachlass’ (the box is heavily scuffed and battered, with some tears at the corners and the spine restored). Rare. – Part of the estate of the German naturalist and botanist Martius relating to his *Flora Brasiliensis*. – The prints and drawings presented here focus primarily on landscape depictions. Many sheets bear annotations and captions, presumably written by Martius himself. Two sheets depicting views of Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings bear the inscription ‘Taunay’. This likely refers to Adrien Taunay the Younger (1803–1828), a French painter who – according to Rugendas – took part in the Langsdorff expedition to Brazil as chief draughtsman. - The lithographed plates are landscape depictions from the first part of the *Flora brasiliensis*, the botanical work documenting the great Brazilian expedition led by Martius and Spix (1817–1820). Following Spix’s death in 1826, Martius assumed sole responsibility for compiling and publishing the travel account. He continued the botanical research work until his death in 1865 as part of the ongoing publication of the *Flora brasiliensis*. - Some slight edge wear and tears. Some have come loose from their mounts. Overall, a well-preserved and extensive collection from the naturalist’s significant estate.
