South America – Tierra del Fuego
Lichtenberg, Georg Christoph
Letter from Lichtenberg (printed), dated Göttingen, 6 January 1777, in which he offers the editors of the *Deutsches Museum* illustrations based on Hodges’ work for publication. 1 folded, engraved plate bound in. In: *Deutsches Museum*, Leipzig, Weygand, Vol. 1, Part 2, February 1777, pp. 190–192. Original printed booklet (spine glued, with a few brown spots).
First edition. – A highly interesting account by Lichtenberg, accompanied by the folded plate depicting Tierra del Fuego Indians after Hodges. Lichtenberg reports that, through Forster, he became acquainted with William Hodges, who accompanied Cook’s second expedition as a painter. Hodges enabled Lichtenberg to copy his drawings of Tierra del Fuego, two of which are shown on the copperplate. On his second expedition, in December 1774, Cook stopped at Tierra del Fuego, where the party also encountered local inhabitants and where Hodges produced his drawings. This is followed by a description of Tierra del Fuego and its inhabitants based on Lichtenberg’s conversations with Forster and Hodges. Summarising the travellers’ accounts, he writes of the character and lot of the natives that they are characterised by “indifference, stupidity and extreme misery”.
