Description
USA Niagara Falls & the surrounding countryside as seen from the Grand Bank. 1815. Black ink, pencil and grey wash on four joined sheets of handmade paper (watermark ‘Ruse & Turner, 1812’). Inscribed lower left. 24.7 x 137.1 cm. A large-format, skilfully drawn panorama of what are arguably the world’s most famous waterfalls, presumably drawn on site from a vantage point indicated on the sheet as ‘Grand Bank’. The unsigned but precisely labelled depiction shows the waterfalls on the left, a sparsely wooded plateau behind and in the centre, and a wooded hilly landscape with scattered houses on the right. - The handmade paper used comes from the Joseph Ruse and Richard Turner paper mill, Upper Tovil Mill, Maidstone, Kent, England. - Several tears, two of which have small losses at the top edge; the joins between the sheets show slight browning; an additional central fold on the reverse, with the front slightly more heavily browned; occasional minimal finger and water stains. Overall, a well-preserved, impressive work. Black ink, pencil and grey wash on laid paper in four joined sections (watermark ‘Ruse & Turner, 1812’).
