Description
Potsdam Sandmann, Franz Xaver The New Palace and the Communs. Original hand-coloured and partly egg-white-enhanced lithograph. Potsdam, Otto Janke, c. 1850. On sturdy vellum. 31.5 x 44 cm (48 x 61.7 cm). Below the illustration, an engraved and lithographed title block with details of the artist, printer and publisher. Drescher-Kroll 434. – Printed by J. Rauh, Vienna. – From the twelve-sheet series ‘Potsdam’, for which Janke commissioned the two renowned artists and lithographers Franz Xaver Sandmann and Alexander August Carl Haun. - A sweeping view from Klausberg of the palace, surrounded by the parterre and hedgerow quarters on either side. In the distance, on the right-hand edge of the picture, a steam locomotive from the Berlin–Magdeburg Railway, which had been in operation since 1846. - Some staining and fingerprints (also on the reverse), with a short, restored tear on both the right and left margins. Overall in very good condition. A magnificent print with bright, well-preserved colours. Original hand-coloured and partly heightened lithograph. Below the depiction are lithographed details of the artist, printer and publisher. - From the twelve-sheet series ‘Potsdam’, for which Janke commissioned the two renowned artists and lithographers Franz Xaver Sandmann and Alexander August Carl Haun. - Panoramic view of the palace from Klausberg, surrounded by the park and hedges on both sides. On the right-hand margin, in the distance, a steam locomotive of the Berlin–Magdeburg railway, which has been in operation since 1846. - Somewhat stained and showing finger marks (also on the reverse), each with a small restored tear in the right and left margins. Overall in very good condition. A splendid impression with bright and well-preserved colours.
