Description
Potsdam Sandmann, Franz Xaver St Petri-Pauli Church in Nikolskoe. Original hand-coloured and partly egg-white-enhanced lithograph. Potsdam, Otto Janke, c. 1850. On sturdy vellum. 31.7 x 44.3 cm (52.4 x 67 cm). Below the illustration is an engraved and lithographed title block, with details of the artist, printer and publisher. Printed by J. Rauh, Vienna. – From the twelve-sheet series ‘Potsdam’, for which Janke commissioned the two renowned artists and lithographers Franz Xaver Sandmann and Alexander August Carl Haun. - A picturesque view of the Church of St Peter and Paul in Nikolskoe, with Peacock Island in the background. The scene is embellished with figurative staffage. - Slightly browned in the former passe-partout cut-out, with some light staining in places; print marks along the upper margin and a backing strip running around the reverse (evidence of previous mounting). Overall in good condition. A magnificent, nuanced print in delicate colours. Original hand-coloured and partly heightened lithograph. Below the depiction are lithographed details of the artist, printer and publisher. - From the twelve-sheet series ‘Potsdam’, for which Janke commissioned the two renowned artists and lithographers Franz Xaver Sandmann and Alexander August Carl Haun. - Some browning where the mat was previously cut out, with some slight staining, pressure marks in the upper margin and backing all round on the reverse (as traces of previous mounting). Good overall. A splendid, nuanced impression in delicate colours.
