Asia Blaeu, Willem Janszoon Asia Noviter Delineata. 1641/42. Hand-coloured copperplate engraving on handmade paper with border colouring. Drawn and executed by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571–1638). From: ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ by Joan and Cornelis Blaeu, Amsterdam. 42 x 56.5 cm (56 x 65.5 cm). Sheet with a factory-made, smoothed central fold and text on the reverse; the lower margin bears an engraved Latin privilege mark. An exceedingly rare and magnificent 17th-century map of Asia. Featuring a decorative cartouche on the European section of the map, adorned with figurative elements in the form of cryptids, mammals and ships, crowned by borders depicting, in parallel, trading centres such as Kandy, Calcutta, Goa, Damascus and Macao, flanked on either side by pairs of figures representing different ethnic groups of Asia. - Willem Janszoon Blaeu was a pupil of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe in the late 16th century and, from 1633, the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). - Slightly browned and with a pale margin; creases and handling marks; a tear and a small loss at the top. - Overall in good condition.
