Description
Germany – Northern Germany
Saxonum regionis quatenus eius gentis imperium nomenque. Copperplate map by J. v. Deutecum after Chr. Sgrooten, showing places, buildings and woodland, mountain and water features, as well as a scale frame and scale bar (small German miles). On the reverse, a four-column text featuring a floral woodcut initial (fol. 8). Antwerp, De Jode, 1578. 45.4 x 33 cm (plate). Sheet of sturdy handmade paper, printed on both sides and folded vertically (reinforced at the fold on the reverse; the reverse side has a light margin).
Early, wide-format map of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg from De Jode’s famous *Speculum Orbis Terrarum*. - Koemann III, 2100:32. - Ortroy, pp. 125/69 and p. 65. - New Hollstein, Deutecum III/578. - This copperplate map, with additional etching in places and featuring an extensive title block, depicts the area formerly inhabited by Saxon tribes, i.e. the whole of northern Germany from Friesland and Paderborn to Flensburg, Rügen, Stettin, Dresden and Kassel, as well as parts of Denmark and western Poland. However, the depiction is not intended to be historical, but rather modern and geographical, as evidenced by the Hanseatic cog sailing in the Baltic Sea. - It is worth noting as a special feature that this is the first time the Stechnitz Canal between the Elbe and Lübeck has been included on a printed map, and that the place name ‘Bardowick’ appears in two different versions. Off the coast of Usedom, the legendary Vineta is marked. - The white margin shows slight finger and dirt marks in places, with slight browning throughout; overall, a clean print with consistently strong and high-contrast colours.
