Germany – Maps of the Course of the Rhine De Wit, Frederick *Totius Fluminis Rheni Novissima*. c. 1670. Coloured copperplate engraving, composed of two plates. 104 x 32 cm. With an allegorical cartouche and maritime scenery. Printed by Frederick de Wit, Amsterdam. – This map depicts the entire course of the Rhine in a decorative composition comprising two segments. The title on the left-hand cartouche ‘Totius Fluminis Rheni Novissima Descriptio ex officina F. de Wit’ refers to the Amsterdam publisher and cartographer Frederick de Wit, whose maps of the Rhine in the late 17th century rank among the most prestigious cartographic works of their kind. The territories, towns and landscapes situated along the river are depicted in dense topographical detail, with their boundaries clearly marked. – Mounted in places on backing and in a passe-partout.
