Ischia, formerly known as Aenaria. Hand-coloured copperplate map by Ortelius, based on a design by M. Cartario for J. Jasolinus, featuring an illustrated title cartouche and two text cartouches, a detailed depiction of towns, buildings and woodland, as well as mountain ranges and watercourses. On the reverse is a text, featuring a florally illustrated, old-coloured woodcut initial. Antwerp, Ortelius, 1590. Approx. 49 x 36.5 cm (plate). Vertically folded sheet of sturdy handmade paper (reinforced at the fold on the reverse).
An extremely decorative bird’s-eye view of the largest Neapolitan island in beautiful old colouring. – vdBroecke 142. – Meurer, Fontes, p. 174. - The view from the mainland at the western tip of the Gulf of Naples (Monte di Procida) features three painted Renaissance cartouches, ships’ figures and a highly detailed depiction of the terrain and buildings.- The reverse has two small areas of loss expertly backed; both the front and reverse show light discolouration around the edges due to previous framing. The white margin shows slight handling marks in places; overall, a magnificent example of this vibrantly coloured map.
