Moscovie, otherwise known as Great and White Russia. Copperplate engraving with period border decoration. Copperplate map by Duval (Du Val) dated before 1680, 39 x 50.5 cm.
A rare map of European Russia (‘Moscovie’) published by the Parisian geographer Pierre Duval. The title appears at the bottom edge. The map depicts the territory from Novaya Zemlya in the north to Astrakhan in the south. To the west, the map extends as far as the eastern Baltic Sea, including Finland and the Baltic states. The borders are coloured in the style of the period. Pierre Duval (1618/19–1683) was from Abbeville and was the nephew and pupil of the cartographer Nicolas Sanson. He became ‘Géographe ordinaire du Roy’ and worked as a map publisher in Paris. Duval published numerous maps and geographical works. The map follows the tradition of the Sanson school.
