2 works. Peacock Island near Potsdam / The New Theatre and the two towers on Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. c. 1820–1830. Each a coloured copperplate engraving on (Ruse & Turner’s 1817) vellum (with watermark). Sheet size up to 23.1 x 35 cm. Each bearing the engraved title at the bottom edge and engraved text giving the artist’s, engraver’s and publisher’s details.
After drawings by Frédéric Fregevize and Friedrich August Calau (1769 Leipzig–1828 Berlin). - Published by Bapt. Weiss, at the corner of Moren and Friedrichstr., Berlin. - A view of the idyllic Peacock Island on the River Havel, capturing the romantic, almost paradisiacal atmosphere of the islet, which served as a royal retreat for Frederick William II and later Frederick William III. - A veduta view of what is said to be Berlin’s most beautiful square, the Gendarmenmarkt, featuring the old theatre and the two strikingly soaring towers of the German and French Cathedrals in the Baroque style. - Slightly to heavily tanned, with slight stains and small, pale brown spots; some with slight creases, handling marks or minimal paper loss in one corner. Overall in good condition. Consistently superb prints with high-contrast colouring in a broad colour palette, each with margins.
