Description
Germany – Brandenburg Schleuen, Johann David View of the Royal Prussian Pleasure Palace at Oranienburg, as it faces the town. c. 1770. Copperplate engraving on handmade paper, hand-coloured. 18.5 x 31 cm (23 x 31 cm). At the top, the Latin architectural inscription on the main cornice with a German heading; titled at the bottom. Mounted on a passe-partout and framed behind glass. The view shows the town-facing side of the palace, built by Luise Henriette of Orange and extended from 1690 onwards under Elector Frederick III, enlivened with rich decorative elements. The River Havel is marked on the right. The companion piece shows the palace from the garden side. - Trimmed at the sides and top to the edge of the sheet; with a narrow margin at the bottom. The paper is evenly browned due to age, more so towards the edges, with isolated foxing and a few small, scattered spots. Overall in very good condition. An excellent, well-defined and richly detailed print with delicate colouring. Copper engraving with contemporary hand colouring on laid paper. Featuring the Latin building inscription from the main cornice and a German heading above, with a title below. Mounted in a passe-partout and framed under glass. - The view depicts the town-facing façade of the palace built by Louise Henriette of Orange and extended from 1690 under Elector Frederick III, enlivened by numerous staffage figures. The River Havel is labelled on the right. The companion print shows the palace from the garden side.
