Germany – Hamburg Gray, James A Souvenir of Hamburg. Hamburg as seen from the Elbe waterworks in St Pauli. c. 1840, Hamburg. Hand-coloured copperplate engraving on vellum, assembled from several sheets, mounted over the entire surface. Drawn and executed by James Gray for Berendsohn. 37 x 50.3 cm (49 x 67.5 cm). With a trilingual engraved inscription containing the title and ownership details in the lower margin. A magnificent view featuring figures in the foreground, looking out over Hamburg. The central panoramic view highlights the city’s silhouette with its church spires and the River Alster, whilst the surrounding panels complement the scene with a panorama of urban and rural life in the surrounding area. The peripheral views, depicted simultaneously, show St Michael’s Church, the Tonhalle, Hamburg railway station, the Alsterdamm, the Hotel de Russie, etc. – Slightly lightened at the edges and browned, with tears in places. – Overall still in good condition.
