Description
Germany – North Rhine-Westphalia – Wuppertal-Elberfeld Hilverkus, J. C. View of the town of Elberfeld. c. 1830. Colour lithograph on vellum. c. 28 x 47 cm. With typographic title in the margin. Mounted in places on backing paper and beneath a passe-partout with a gold border, and framed in a gold-coloured moulding (unframed). Printed by the Lithographic Institute of Arnz & Co., Düsseldorf. – This lithograph shows a panoramic view of the town of Elberfeld (now a district of Wuppertal) from the north-western outskirts. The lithograph was produced as a supplement to the constitutional treatise by the Mayor of Elberfeld, J.R. Brüning, and documents the town at a time of growth: in the foreground, land still undeveloped; in the middle ground, the foundation pit for St Lawrence’s Church (foundation stone laid in 1829). - The sheet appears to have slight light-fading along the edges, isolated spots and partial scuffing.
