France Martens, Frédéric Panorama of Le Havre-de-Grace seen from the Ingouville coast. Colour aquatint etching. (Paris, Rittner & Goupil, c. 1840.) 21.3 x 91.2 cm (30.5 x 96.1 cm). With an old central fold. Frédéric Martens’s aquatint ‘Panorama du Havre-de-Grace pris de la côte d’Ingouville’ depicts a striking panoramic view of the port of Le Havre, seen from the elevated coast of Ingouville. The panorama captures the vast harbour, the city of Le Havre and the activity on the water – including numerous ships, the choppy sea and the towering cityscape. The perspective from the coast highlights the important seaport and the connection between the city and the sea. The aquatint technique produces rich, painterly tones and a nuanced depiction of light, atmosphere and architectural details. Frédéric Martens (1806–1885) was a prominent veduta and panorama artist, renowned for his finely detailed cityscapes. The prints were published by Rittner & Goupil. The aquatint technique is characteristic of Martens’ work – it allows for delicate gradations and detailed views that are both documentary and atmospheric. - Slightly browned with a few water stains and two small tears in the white margin. Rare as a coloured print.
