Description
France – Alsace Löser, J. The Church of Peace on the battlefield of Wörth. Original pen-and-ink wash drawing. 1876. 42.8 x 33 cm. Signed, dated and inscribed with the place name ‘Nuremberg’. A finely detailed drawing of the parish church at Fröschweiler in Alsace. An earlier building was destroyed during the Battle of Wörth; the new building depicted here, erected on the same site, was given the name ‘Peace Church’ at its consecration on 30 July 1876. - The subject of the drawing subsequently gained wider circulation as a woodcut by the Nuremberg artist and engraver Johann Karl Löser. - The subject features a small, inconspicuous hole in the centre; the margin shows traces of previous mounting or framing; there is a short tear in the centre on the right; the corners are slightly bumped. Overall, a well-preserved, meticulously executed and finely illuminated original drawing. France – Alsace – The church on the battlefield of Wörth. Original washed pen and ink drawing.
