Peters, Bernhard
Mountain Landscape with Rowers. 1866. Oil on canvas. 65 x 54 cm. Signed and dated. In a moulded, gold-coloured frame.
Provenance: Private collection in northern Germany. – The landscape and veduta painter Bernhard Peters’s artistic output is primarily linked to his hometown of Anklam. Often depicted, it forms his main subject matter alongside views of Hanseatic coastal towns and high-mountain landscapes. After receiving his basic training in Anklam, he studied at the Berlin Academy of Painting under Otto Völckel between 1838 and 1848; he subsequently undertook study trips to the Northern Alps, the Salzkammergut and Lake Hallstatt, and travelled throughout southern and northern Germany. Inspiration and countless impressions flowed into his artistic work. Our painting, which dates from the final year of Peters’ life, bears witness to his sensitive empathy and imaginative perception of nature. Extremely atmospheric, it depicts an idealised, lyrical mountain landscape, reminiscent of the style of Claude Lorrain. – Works by Bernhard Peters are very rarely found on the auction market. - Age-related craquelure and varnish, isolated flaking of paint, minor loss of paint with surface abrasion towards the centre of the left-hand outer edge; the stretcher slightly showing through on the reverse; the reverse is slightly dusty; overall in very good condition. The colours are fresh.
