27 coloured lithographs. Industrial procession in Strasbourg. 1840. Each approx. 21.5 x 42 cm (34.5 x 53.5 cm). 23 sheets, some mounted on backing paper and fitted into passe-partouts.
Printed by Gluck, Paris 1840. – 27 hand-coloured lithographs documenting the ceremonial ‘Cortège industriel’ held as part of the Fêtes de Gutenberg. Various craft and trade guilds took part in a procession, with each guild or profession grouped around a symbolic object or tool representing its specific expertise or field of activity. - Includes, amongst others: Confectioners/Hairdressers – Lithographers – Weavers – Typographers – Tinsmiths – Joiners – Woodturners – Boatmen – Upholsterers – Boilermakers – Tailors - Papetiers – Bouchers – Peintres et Vernisseurs – Coiffeurs – Teinturiers – Tamisiers – Charpentiers. - Some sheets bear inscriptions in a third party’s hand; the margins are partly more heavily browned, with some showing crease marks or minor tears. Some have faint mould stains; the reverse side has scattered brown spots. Overall, in very good condition.
