Lautenschläger, Gustav Wilhelm
Tree-lined Avenue. c. 1910. Oil on canvas. 55 x 45 cm. Signed.
A painting by the Viennese artist Gustav Wilhelm Lautenschläger (1859 – c. 1945) depicting a view along an autumnal tree-lined avenue. The leaves, turning yellow in anticipation of autumn, harmonise with the yellowish fields in the background of the picture. - As Gustav Wilhelm Lautenschläger is known to have been active in Baden near Vienna from 1928 onwards, the landscape depicted in the painting can most likely be situated in Lower Austria, specifically in the transitional area between the Vienna Woods and the southern Vienna Basin. The gently undulating meadow hills, the avenue of autumn-coloured deciduous trees running alongside a country lane, and the vast, cloud-filled sky without a mountain silhouette correspond exactly to the type of landscape that prevails on the edge of the Vienna Woods at the transition to the Pannonian Plain – namely, the thermal spa region around Baden near Vienna, where the artist is known to have lived and worked. The nearby Weinviertel or the Marchfeld are also possible locations, as Lautenschläger worked as a landscape painter across large parts of Lower Austria and repeatedly painted similar motifs featuring autumnal groups of trees, such as in his well-known work ‘At the Spring’ featuring a birch grove in autumnal colours. Stylistically, too, this painting fits into his body of work, which is characterised by slightly impasto, Art Nouveau-inspired landscape painting with autumnal colouring. Overall, the landscape can therefore most plausibly be identified as a Lower Austrian scene from the area around Baden near Vienna and the neighbouring foothills of the Vienna Woods. Minor losses to the canvas at the edges. Overall, a well-preserved painting in opaque colours.
Painting by the Viennese painter Gustav Wilhelm Lautenschläger (1859 – c. 1945) depicting a view along an autumnal tree-lined avenue. The leaves, which have turned yellow in anticipation of autumn, harmonise with the yellowish fields in the background of the painting. As Gustav Wilhelm Lautenschläger is documented as having been active in Baden bei Wien from 1928 onwards, the landscape depicted in the painting can, with a high degree of probability, be situated in Lower Austria, specifically in the transitional zone between the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) and the southern Vienna Basin. The gently rolling meadow hills, the avenue of autumn-coloured deciduous trees lining a field track, and the wide, cloud-filled sky without any mountain silhouette correspond precisely to the type of landscape found on the edge of the Wienerwald where it transitions into the Pannonian lowlands – that is, the spa region (Thermenregion) around Baden bei Wien, where the artist is known to have lived and worked. Furthermore, the nearby Weinviertel or the Marchfeld may also be considered, as Lautenschläger, as a landscape painter, was active across large parts of Lower Austria and repeatedly painted similar motifs featuring autumnal groups of trees, as seen, for instance, in his well-known work ‘An der Quelle’ (“At the Spring”), which depicts an autumn-coloured birch grove. Stylistically, too, this painting fits within his body of work, which is characterised by a slightly impasto, Art Nouveau-influenced landscape style with autumnal colours. All in all, the landscape can most plausibly be identified as a Lower Austrian scene from the area around Baden bei Wien and the neighbouring foothills of the Wienerwald. Minor losses to the canvas at the edges. Overall, a well-preserved painting in opaque colours.
