Description
Biedermeier German, 19th century 2 Biedermeier portraits. Circa 1830. Each in pastel on dark vellum, partly highlighted in white. Each 19 x 15 cm. The portrait of the lady has a piece of cardboard attached to the reverse bearing the handwritten details: “Miss Wilhelmine Schwarz, born 10 December and died 6 October 1855, sister of Carl Ludwig Schwarz, father of Carl Albert Schwarz”, as well as a clipped-out section from an older auction catalogue with an illustration and description. Each mounted under glass in an ornamental, gold-coloured frame (unopened). A refined pair of Biedermeier portraits, depicting the subjects as half-length figures against a monochrome background; they are particularly impressive in their rendering of the translucent lace and the serious, lively facial expressions. The technique and style are reminiscent of the pastel portraits by Johann Joseph Schmeller, who, commissioned by Goethe, painted some 130 portraits of his contemporaries between 1824 and 1832 and whose portraits were also very well received by Weimar’s bourgeoisie. - Appears to be in very good and clean condition.
