Description
Albums of drawings
Artistic album of the Haenel family. Containing numerous watercolours and drawings. 19th century. 50 leaves. 4°. Dark violet leather binding with blind-stamped and silver-stamped fillets and inner edges, as well as an ornamental frame featuring a central monogram ‘M. F.’ made of glass set in a metal frame, housed in a wooden case with clasps (slightly scuffed).
The album, with its magnificently designed binding, contains 50 leaves, artfully adorned with watercolours, drawings or inscriptions. These include, in particular, portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, as well as floral illustrations and fairy-tale figures. Most of the watercolours and drawings are signed by a F. Haenel, though a few are also signed by a Luise Haenel and a G. Haenel, and are dated between 1854 and 1869. One watercolour bears the name ‘Sophie von Brandenstein’. The endpapers (front and back) feature mounted portraits, possibly of the artists who created the drawings. One page also features mounted, decoratively arranged dried flowers, and three pages feature small mounted prints. Most of the mounted elements feature decorative gold or silver frames. The handwritten sayings are also mostly illustrated. – Some pages have slight foxing. Overall, a very well-preserved album with colourful drawings.
