Description
German, 18th century
8 engravings depicting heroes. Each is a hand-coloured copperplate engraving on handmade paper. 25.5 x 18 cm (33 x 21 cm). Typographically inscribed and some bearing the mark of the imperial printing privilege. Two sheets each mounted selectively onto backing paper and set in a passe-partout. Augsburg, probably published by Martin Engelbrecht or associates (Jeremias Wolff, Johann Friedrich Probst), c. 1720–1740. From a numbered series depicting heroes from antiquity, heroic legends and chivalric romances
Bearing the imperial printing privilege ‘Cum Privil. Sac. Caes. Maj.’ - A Baroque series featuring figures from ancient mythology, Germanic heroic legends and medieval chivalric romances: Hector, Achilles, Siegfried, Duke Ernst, Olivier, Tristrand (Tristan), Pontus and Florenz. Each sheet depicts a dominant individual figure in Baroque armour, complemented by background scenes and two-column verse captions in cursive script. Given the imperial printing privilege noted on several sheets, the prints were probably produced in Nuremberg, Augsburg or Frankfurt. - The paper is yellowed with age and has some stains; in places it shows slight creases and has been bumped. Overall in good condition.
