Description
German, first half of the 19th century.
Quodlibet collage. c. 1820. Collage comprising copperplate engravings, etchings, letterpress prints, autograph book pages and embossed, coloured greeting cards, metal foils, gold and silver paper as well as coloured papers, together with watercolour and opaque paints, mounted on contemporary, grey-blue, hand-made rag paper with distinct fibre inclusions. 21 x 29 cm. Partially mounted beneath a passe-partout and framed behind glass.
An artfully composed commemorative sheet in the style of a trompe-l’oeil, arranged around a central watercolour landscape miniature. Assembled from clippings, presumably from various autograph books and greeting cards of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including a coat of arms of the von Alvensleben family, the calling card ‘Le Baron Bretfeld, Garde de Couronne’ (Joseph Baron von Bretfeld, 1729–1820, Crown Guard of the Kingdom of Bohemia), numerous verses and congratulatory messages in German and French, as well as the date ‘Early on 11 November 1816 at 10 o’clock’. The handmade paper support suggests that the collage was created around the same time as the elements used. – Metal foils partly oxidised, rubbed and with missing areas; individual elements with small glazes, slightly browned. Support stained on the reverse, with a trace of red pigment on the right-hand margin. Overall, very good condition.

The handmade backing board suggests that the collage was created around the same time as the elements used. – Metal foils partly oxidised, rubbed and with areas missing; some elements have minor defects and are slightly browned. The backing board is stained on the reverse, with a red chalk mark at the right-hand edge. Overall in very good condition.
