Ridinger, circle of Johann Elias A collection of 13 illustrations from *Betrachtung der wilden Thiere mit beygefügter vortrefflicher Poesie des hochberühmten Herrn Barthold Heinrich Brocke*. 1736. Copperplate engravings on handmade paper. 35 x 43 cm. Inscribed on the plate. 3 prints trimmed at the edges. One print mounted within a passe-partout at the upper corners. Copperplate engravings occasionally show small brown spots. Margins partially bumped. Occasionally slight yellowing on the reverse and in the margins. Overall, excellent, sharp engravings, executed with great finesse. - This series, published in Augsburg in 1736, ranks among Johann Elias Ridinger’s best-known print publications. The work comprises an engraved title page and 40 copper plates depicting native and exotic wild animals. This collection comprises the engraved title page and 12 plates, of which six depict large game, four depict wildcats and two depict members of the weasel family (Mustelidae). Beneath each illustration are verses of several lines by the poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes, in German, French and Latin. The series documents Ridinger’s interest in natural history as well as his outstanding position as an animal illustrator of the 18th century, combining scientific observation with Baroque representational printmaking. – Wkz.
