Description
2 sheets. Puzzle picture (Keerprent): The Woman Who Was Married Four Times. 1. Copperplate engraving on handmade paper. Circa 1700. Plate dimensions 20.5 x 15.5 cm, sheet dimensions 33.5 x 20 cm. Numbered in the upper margin. 2. Red chalk and pen in brown and black on handmade paper. Circa 1730. 19.5 x 16.5 cm. Inscribed in pencil ‘Ec. Hollandaise’. Each sheet individually mounted on backing board beneath a passe-partout.
A satirical optical illusion drawing which, when rotated in 90° increments, reveals the heads of a young woman, a sheep, an old man with ram’s horns and another man, each accompanied by a numbered Dutch couplet in which the woman mocks her husbands. The drawing faithfully reproduces the composition of the copperplate engraving, though it differs in the numbering of the verses and the wording. A rare combination of the print and a drawn version of the same motif. - The paper is aged and browned, partly stained or showing some foxing; the margins are irregular with small tears and slight creases; the drawing also has a watermark. Overall in very good condition; the drawing is finely detailed; the excellent print is crisp and high-contrast.
