Decorative Arts
Decorations pour Appartements de Gout. With 31 coloured copperplate engravings. Paris, Ebert & Comp., 1840. Quarto. Hardback. Paperback (heavily scuffed and bumped, spine severely brittle).
First edition. – Very rare. – With ownership stamps from Erika Schug and Ernst Thaller. – Designs for curtains for bedrooms, boudoirs, alcoves and other rooms. A rare collection of designs for interior decoration from the era of the July Monarchy. The 31 coloured copper plates show designs for window and bed draperies, curtains, seating and cabinet furniture, mirrors and wall decorations. Such illustrated collections were aimed at upholsterers, interior decorators, cabinetmakers and wealthy building owners. The colouring illustrates not only the form and structure, but also the colour and choice of fabrics for the furnishings. The plates thus provide a vivid testimony to the tastes of the upper middle classes around 1840. Stylistically, the designs belong to the period between the late Empire style and the historicism of the Louis-Philippe style, with neo-Gothic, neo-Rococo and Renaissance influences. During these years, the upholsterer-decorator gained prominence as a distinct profession. Complete, colour-preserved sets of these plates from this period are rarely found on the market. They were heavily used as working templates in workshops or dismantled into individual sheets. - Stained and with browned edges. Well preserved overall.
