Froehner, Wilhelm
La Verrerie antique, description de la collection Charvet. With a frontispiece and 34 lithographed plates (some hand-coloured). Paris, Le Pecq: J. Charvet, 1879. 139 pp. (1) p., plates. Folio. Contemporary half-leather binding with gold-stamped title on the spine (slightly rubbed).
Henrivaux, *La verrerie*, 2nd ed. – Rare first edition; we are currently unable to trace any copies of this edition on the international market. This magnificent and important work on decorative arts systematically catalogues ancient glassware, supplemented by vignettes in the text and numbered specimens (e.g. No. 77 of 150), with a focus on the forms, techniques and provenances of Roman and Greek objects. Froehner, an expert in antiquities, provides detailed descriptions that highlight the collection as one of the most significant of the 19th century. - Wilhelm Fröhner, born in Karlsruhe in 1834 as Christian Eduard Ludwig Wilhelm Fröhner, was a German classical archaeologist who, after completing his studies in Bonn, Freiburg and Göttingen, settled in France from 1859 onwards, where he worked as a curator in the Department of Greco-Roman Antiquities at the Louvre. He served as a reader to Emperor Napoleon III, became a French citizen in 1866 and, following his dismissal in 1871 as a result of the Franco-Prussian War, compiled numerous catalogues of important private collections of antiquities. As is the case with all copies, the paper is in places slightly browned or stained. The plates are in places very splendid and richly coloured.
