Collected Essays in Ornamental Art. Translated from the Swedish by H. C. March. Text volume and plate volume. With over 100 illustrations printed within the text and 20 full-page plates. Stockholm, Aftenbladets Tryckeri, 1927. VII, 128 pp. 2 leaves, 20 plates, each with a bound-in text leaf. 4° and large folio. Brown half-leather binding with gold-stamped title on the front and back covers (buffed and scuffed, flaking on the front cover of the text volume).
One of 300 numbered copies. – With a handwritten and dated owner’s note by the ethnologist Martin Guisinde. - As part of the Vanadis Expedition in 1883 and 1885, the Swedish ethnographer and archaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe (1841–1905) travelled to South America, Oceania, Asia and parts of Europe. During this journey, he collected numerous specimens for what would later become the ethnographic collection of the Natural History Museum in Stockholm. The publications by Stolpe compiled in this work were published in 1890 and 1896 and deal with the development of ornamental art amongst indigenous peoples. - Margins slightly browned. One leaf loose in the plate volume. Overall, very well-preserved copies.
