Description
Typography German, 18th century Illustrated alphabet. ‘May God grant peace to the Fatherland’. c. 1790. Pencil on vellum. 25 x 33.5 cm. Inscribed by another hand. Mounted in places on backing paper and beneath a passe-partout. The sheet is slightly browned due to age and has small, faint stains; there are some crease marks in places, and the edges are slightly irregular. Overall in good condition. The letters of this figurative alphabet are formed from small-scale scenes and ornately intertwined figures, playfully combining genre, allegory and caricature, thus following in the tradition of autograph book pages from student circles, in which moral and patriotic aphorisms were visualised in an artistic and often humorous manner.
