A very rare first edition of this drawing manual by the artist Ludovico Mattioli. – With Agostino Caironi’s owner’s stamp on the title page. – Ludovico Mattioli, a draughtsman and copperplate engraver working in Bologna, presents anatomical studies on 23 copperplate engravings as a guide for students of drawing. Whilst the first 11 plates deal mainly with individual studies of body parts, the other half of the plates show portraits and staged depictions of the human body. Also noteworthy is the very early portrait of a black boy in European clothing. For this rare textbook, the illustrator Mattioli drew inspiration in part from the works of fellow artists, including Agostino Carracci, Jusepe de Ribera, Federico Barocci and Carlo Maratti. – Some pages are heavily stained.
