Schmerber, Hugo
Research into the Art History of Bohemia. IV. Contributions to the History of the Dintzenhofers. With 7 photographic plates and further illustrations in the text. Prague, J.G. Calve Court and University Bookshop, 1900. 2 leaves, 64 pp. Folio. Two softback volumes in an original folder (scuffed and bumped, with foxing; folder stained and with tears).
An extremely rare large-format work with high-quality photogravures. – The Dintzenhofers, originally from Bavaria, are counted amongst the most significant and, in terms of architectural and art-historical influence, most influential designers and builders of Baroque structures in Central Europe. They were involved, amongst other things, in around 250 buildings—both their own and those commissioned by others—in Bohemia, various regions of present-day Germany and Austria (Franconia, Hesse, Silesia and the Upper Palatinate), as well as in Italy (Rome, Venice and Turin). The five brothers and their descendants are best known for the religious buildings and aristocratic residences erected under their leadership, such as Passau Cathedral, Hradčany and the Clementinum in Prague, and St Peter’s Church in Vienna. – Overall, a very well-preserved and clean copy.
