Description
Weale, John
Quarterly Papers on Architecture. 4 vols. With numerous plates, some coloured or chromolithographed. London, Weale, 1844. 4°. Contemporary half-leather binding (slightly scuffed).
This anthology brings together detailed, separately paginated case studies on ancient and medieval architectural styles in Europe. A central aspect of the work is the interconnection between architecture proper and the decorative arts. A great deal of space is devoted to precise studies and magnificent illustrations of historical stained glass, liturgical tile patterns, murals and furnishings of ancient cathedrals and churches. In doing so, the work drew attention to the fact that historical architecture must be understood as a total work of art, including its original colour scheme. Weale also documented the lives of contemporary colleagues in the book, such as the biography of the Irish architect William Vitruvius Morrison.
