Alembert, Jean le Rond de Article on Geneva in the Encyclopédie, Profession of Faith of the Geneva Ministers. With notes by a theologian. Amsterdam, Zacharie Chatelain, 1759. IV, 156 pp. 8°. Contemporary paper binding with handwritten title (heavily rubbed and bumped, with small losses to the cover and headband). Rare. – With a handwritten owner’s note dated 1820 on the endpaper and handwritten annotations in the text. - The French mathematician, physicist and philosopher of the Enlightenment, Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert, published the *Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers* together with Denis Diderot. For this work, in addition to over 1,700 articles, he also wrote several prefaces and the article ‘Geneve’ featured here. - Untrimmed. Book block separated. Edges browned and in places slightly stained. Well preserved overall. Contemporary cardboard binding with a handwritten title on the spine (heavily rubbed and bumped, with small losses to the cover and the top of the spine). – Rare. – With a handwritten ownership inscription dated 1820 on the flyleaf and handwritten annotations in the text. - The French mathematician, physicist and Enlightenment philosopher Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert co-published the *Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers* with Denis Diderot. For this work, in addition to writing over 1,700 articles, he penned several prefaces and the article ‘Geneve’ presented here. - Uncut. Text block separated.
