Arabic Literature Jami, Mevlana Abdurrahman Majnun and Layla. A Persian romance by Jami. 2 vols. Amsterdam, Kunst- und Industriecomptoir, 1808. 208 pp., 191 pp. Small 8°. Contemporary half-leather binding, each volume with two leather labels and a gold-embossed title on the spine, leather corners and marbled covers (somewhat scuffed, rubbed and bumped). First German edition. – Goedeke VII, 586, 32, 3. – From the Princely Starhemberg Family Library at Eferding Castle (each with a stamp on the endpaper and a handwritten call number). - A famous tale by the Persian mystic and poet Jami about the love story of a couple belonging to two rival tribes. Presented here in a translation from the French by Anton Theodor Hartmann. - Dschami is regarded as a leading exponent of Sufi mysticism. He fashioned the story of the loving couple, as it were, into a parable about love for God. - The endpapers and a few other leaves are slightly foxed; otherwise, these are extremely well-preserved and clean copies.
