Baroque
Acta Sanctorum Bollandiana: The Apologetic Books, now compiled for the first time into a single volume. Vindicata. Or: An Apologetic Supplement to the Acta Bollandiana … to Benedict XIV, D.D.D. With woodcut printer’s mark. Antwerp, Vander Plassche, 1755. Folio. 8 unnumbered leaves, XXVI, 1024 pp. Contemporary blind-embossed calfskin binding on 5 bands with remnants of the clasp (discreetly restored), slightly bumped).
First edition. – Johann Bollandus had begun in 1643 to publish the biographies of all the saints, examined in an act-based, historical and critical manner; this work was continued by numerous collaborators who, in his honour, came to be known as ‘Bollandists’. - Cf. ADB 3, p. 109 – This colossal project to examine all the historical lives of Christian saints from a scholarly and critical perspective met with fierce resistance from other religious orders (particularly the Carmelites and Dominicans). They saw traditional legends as threatened by the Jesuits’ source criticism. This volume brings together all the Bollandists’ defensive treatises (apologies). It served as an official work of justification, dedicated to Pope Benedict XIV. - Name on inside cover, small note on endpaper; overall a good, very clean copy.
