Description
Baroque
A Baroque scholarly library comprising 59 volumes from the 17th and 18th centuries, including printed, handwritten, hand-printed and hand-written volumes. Folio to 8°.
This collection preserves the knowledge of an era in which scholarship still encompassed the entire spectrum of the sciences. It brings together titles from the classical disciplines of theology, classical philology, history and geography. It is suitable as the foundation of a collection, as a feature of a prestigious study, or as a source for the history of science and the history of the book. Of particular note are the *Dictionnaire des conciles* (Paris 1764), a reference work on the history of church councils, and Abel’s *Preußische Staats-Historie* (Leipzig 1735), a contemporary account of Prussian history. Also included are Rippel’s *Alterthumb: Bedeutung aller Ceremonien* (1723), which is devoted to the interpretation of ecclesiastical and ritual ceremonies, and Calmet’s *Biblische Historie* (1759), a classic in its field. Lohner’s *Bibliotheca concionatoria* I–IV (Venice 1708) was the four-volume standard work on sermon preparation. The library’s provenance lends it particular appeal. Numerous old and more recent ownership marks document its passage through several hands. Formerly owned by a well-known classical philologist. All volumes have contemporary bindings in full vellum, half-vellum or full leather; only very few are in half-leather. This lends the collection a uniform and harmonious appearance. It comprises 30 folio volumes, which make a striking impression on the shelf, as well as 29 volumes in octavo to small octavo formats. - The volumes are mostly somewhat stained, bumped and browned; in a few instances, the head letters and covers show minor losses. The browning is predominantly due to the paper. Overall, the condition is very good for books of this age.
