Cassan, Jacques de
An Inquiry into the Rights of the King and the Crown of France over the kingdoms, duchies, counties, towns and territories occupied by foreign princes, which belong to the Most Christian Kings by virtue of conquest, succession, purchase, donation and other legitimate titles. A Compendium of their Rights over the Empire, and of the Duties and Oaths of Allegiance Owed to their Crown by Various Foreign Princes. Rouen, F. Vaultier and J. Besongne, 1643. Small 8vo. 7 leaves (unbound), 788 pp. Contemporary leather binding with a red shield and large heraldic supralibro on both covers (slightly rubbed).
A seminal work on French political history, intended to provide a legal basis for France’s expansionist foreign policy during the Thirty Years’ War. – Cf. Cioranescu, XVII, 17942. - In it, Cassan established France’s historical claims to kingdoms, duchies and cities throughout Europe – including territories in the Holy Roman Empire (such as Alsace and Lorraine), in Italy, and parts of Spain and Flanders. Jacques de Cassan was a Royal Councillor (Conseiller du Roi) and chief lawyer in Béziers, in the south of France. He wrote the work as a direct contribution to Cardinal Richelieu, to provide a legalistic veneer for French aggression against the Habsburgs. - Title page and final page bear the author’s name; the first few leaves show faint (rapidly fading) water stains.
