Description
Baroque Del Rio, Martin Disquisitionum Magicarium Libri Sex, containing a thorough refutation of curious arts and vain superstitions, useful to theologians, jurists, physicians and philologists. Mainz, Cologne, Henning, 1624. 4°. 12 leaves, 1070 pp. Contemporary binding (battered and somewhat stained; spine joint with a tear and small losses). 6th expanded German edition. – Grässe 47 – Cornell p. 162 – Rosenthal 2903 – Ackermann I, 506 and V, 777 (editions of 1617 and 1633). The most influential and far-reaching standard work on European witch-hunts and demonology. The 6th edition was published in the midst of the Thirty Years’ War, a period in which witch-hunts in Central Europe reached their absolute peak. Before joining the Society of Jesus, Del Rio was one of the most bloodthirsty members of the High Court established by the Duke of Alba in Flanders. He reports on the methods of torture used in witch trials and the role played by priests in them. - Cf. Caillet 2967 and Dorbon-A. 1139 and 1140. - Creased along the inner fold; name and note on the endpaper and inside cover; first few pages with slight marginal discolouration, more heavily browned, some with slight water stains along the edges.
