Description
Baroque Morhof, Daniel Georg Delitiae Oratoriae Intimioris. Or, On Rhetorical Elaboration and Expansion: A Book of Great Use to Studious Youth, and Long Awaited by Many. With a necessary index. Second, corrected edition. Lübeck, Böckmann, 1712. 3 leaves, 227 pages, 11 leaves in contemporary vellum (slightly stained). A rare work by Morhof on rhetoric. – VD18 1022424 - Morhof (1639–1691), the most distinguished professor at the newly founded University of Kiel, recognised even in his own time the danger that, through specialisation and the increasing autonomy of the individual disciplines, the university would cease to be a centre for the ‘universitas litterarum’. The answer, he argued, could no longer be a ‘studium universale’ that was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of material; rather, it was essential to penetrate the entirety of knowledge in a structured manner, guided by independent judgement (ADB 22, 237 ff). - Included: W. Schönsleder and C. Cellarius, *Apparatus Eloquentiæ, in quo Latinæ Linguæ Opes, ex antiquis probisque Scriptoribus depromptæ, & in locos communes digestæ ... repraesentantur*. Latest edition. Cologne, Gleditsch and Weidmann, 1710. 631 leaves. Title page in red and black. - A fine copy of this rare dictionary. - VD 18 10879927 - Cf. Zaunmüller 255.
